This week we meet Eileen Tan of 7 notes Music school in Frisco, a suburb of North Dallas. We asked Eileen to share her experiences of planning her business, the challenges she is facing right now, and her top tips of others just starting out.
How did you get started with your business?
I started teaching piano in high school and then went to university to study my Master’s Degree in Piano pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching). My mother pushed me to practice as a child and I hated practicing, but she saw something in me that I didn’t understand at the time. I started teaching piano with home lessons, and then in 2003, I decided to take it seriously my first brick & mortar music school.
What your biggest challenge today?
Finding the right people for my team. You need to find people that are passionate about what they do and how music education impacts other lives.
What’s the best piece of advice you could offer someone starting a business?
Know your numbers and get savvy with accounting! Most people are good with their craft, but you really need to understand data, metrics and how much things really cost to be sustainable. This way you can continue to pursue your passion and serve others.
On behalf of the Small Business Community, thank you Eileen!
